This Summer’s 5 Hottest Shows

Coming to the city this Summer? Not sure which show you’d like to check out? We’ve counted down five of the hottest Broadway productions that are closing soon or are just about to open. This way, you can make sure you don’t miss a hit that people will be talking about for years, or you can be one of the first people to catch a hit that others will be talking about for years. Here they are!

5. On the Twentieth Century

Tony Award winner Kristin Chenoweth returns to Broadway in this hilarious revival also starring Golden Globe winner Peter Gallagher and Tony Nominee Andy Karl. When Oscar Jaffee (Gallagher) “embarks on a madcap mission to cajole glamorous Hollywood starlet Lily Garland (Chenoweth) into playing the lead in his new, non-existent epic drama,” mad chaos ensues. If you need any more reason to check out this show before it ends its limited run at The American Airlines Theatre on July 19th, check out On the Twentieth Century’s performance at the Tony Awards this past Sunday.

4. Fish In the Dark

This show opened in the 2014-2015 season, but wasn’t able to snag any Tony nominations. However it was written by, and originally starred, Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiam creator Larry David, which should say a lot about the show’s humor and entertainment value. Jason Alexander just stepped into the show for Mr. David this past week, which means that in a lot of ways this is a brand new show. This comedy about a family coming together to mourn the loss of a family member also stars Glenne Headly, Jayne Houdyshell, and Rosie Perez. It closes July 19th, so get your tickets now!

3. Amazing Grace

“The song the world knows; the story it doesn’t.” This exciting new musical starts performances at the Nederlander Theatre on June 25th. The production had an off Broadway tryout in Chicago. Now the show is ready to make its Broadway debut, and we can’t wait to see how it turns out! The show’s website says that “Amazing Grace is a new original musical based on the awe-inspiring true story behind the world’s most beloved song. A captivating tale of romance, rebellion and redemption, this radiant production follows one man whose incredible journey ignited a historic wave of change.” Sounds “amazing!”

2. An Act of God

This show has already opened at Broadway’s Studio 54, and received wonderful reviews, even from Mr. Charles Isherwood! This show is based on the book, The Last Testament: A Memoir by God, inspired by the Twitter account @TheTweetOfGod. It stars Big Bang Theory Emmy Winner Jim Parsons as God himself in what producers describe as “a 90-minute comedy where the Almighty and His devoted angels answer some of the deepest questions that have plagued mankind since Creation. He’s finally arrived to set the record straight… and He’s not holding back!” The big guy is only sticking around until August 2, so get there soon!

1. Hamilton

I don’t think anyone’s surprised by this one. The premier production at The Public Theatre broke box office records, received rave reviews and won so many awards I’m not even going to try to name all of them. There was lots of speculation that this show would transfer to Broadway in time for the 2014-2015 season, but producers ultimately announced that they would make a summer transfer, making them eligible for the 2016 Tony Awards (as all those eligible for 2015 Tony Awards breathed a sigh of major relief). 11 days after opening up ticket sales for Broadway, the show had already sold over $10 Million worth of tickets, making this the hottest show of the summer. The musical written by (and starring) Lin-Manuel Miranda of In the Heights fame is about “the scrappy young immigrant who forever changed America, from bastard orphan to Washington’s right hand man, rebel to war hero, loving husband caught in the country’s first sex scandal to Treasury head who made an untrusting world believe in the American economy.” Here’s hoping they open up a ticket lottery for this show!
